My Absolute Go-To Snack

岩塚の黒豆煎餅のパッケージ

🎧 Listen to the Audio Blog:

Do you have a go-to snack? Because I definitely do. Mine is Iwatsuka’s Kuromame Senbei (岩塚の黒豆煎餅)—those simple, crunchy rice crackers with whole black beans embedded in them.

I love them for a few reasons. First off, the ingredient list is super short. They’re so simple and clean that I feel totally guilt-free eating them.

They’re also the ultimate work snack. Whenever I’m buried in work at my computer, running out of time to make lunch, and starting to feel that mid-day crash, I tell myself I'll just have two or three.

Okay, I lied. I usually end up eating more than five! I just can't help it—they're *that* good! But hey, they give me an instant energy boost!

Plus, that loud, satisfying crunch when you bite into them gives your brain just the right amount of stimulation to wake you up. That’s exactly why I always keep a whole pack right next to me whenever I have a mountain of work to get through.

💡 Useful Expressions

1. go-to = 「お決まりの、定番の、間違いない」

2. embedded in ~ = 「〜に埋め込まれている」

3. buried in work = 「仕事に追われている、仕事に埋もれている」

4. mid-day crash = 「午後の急激な眠気・だるさ、エネルギー切れ」

5. end up [doing] = 「結局〜することになる、最終的に〜という結果になる」

6. can't help it = 「どうしてもやってしまう、我慢できない、どうしようもない」

Heading to My Studio? Here’s a Clever Parking Hack!

サツドラの看板 複合施設の外観

🎧 Listen to the Audio Blog:

Are you interested in visiting my studio? Do you drive? And do you need a parking space? If your answer happens to be yes to these questions, then I highly recommend reading this!

A brand-new complex—featuring a large drugstore, a coffee shop, and a gym—just opened this past March. Luckily, they have a massive parking lot and it’s within a 3-minute walk from my studio!

By the way, it's not just a regular drugstore! This drugstore offers frozen foods, fruit and vegetables, dairy products, condiments, drinks, alcohol, and snacks, to say nothing of the variety of health-and-beauty-related products and daily necessities.

Here is the best part: if you shop at the drugstore or grab a coffee, you get two hours of free parking!

Today's Useful Phrase #1:

"grab a coffee" = 「(サクッと)コーヒーを買いに行く、飲む」

Today's Useful Phrase #2:

"to say nothing of 〜" = 「〜は言うまでもなく、もちろんのこと」

Today's Useful Phrase #3:

"free parking" = 「無料駐車、無料駐車場」

So, if you’re planning to visit my studio, don’t waste your money on regular parking lots. Instead, just stop by this new drugstore, pick up a bottle of water or something small (you really don't need to spend much—even around ¥100–¥200 is totally fine!), and park your car for free.

Today's Useful Phrase #4:

"stop by 〜" = 「〜にちょっと立ち寄る、寄り道する」

How long do you plan to stay at the studio? I’m pretty sure it’s going to be less than two hours anyway. Regular parking lots around here will easily charge you over ¥600, so skipping them is a no-brainer. Just stop by the drugstore, get what you need, and save some cash!

Today's Useful Phrase #5:

"no-brainer" = 「考えるまでもないこと、迷う余地のないこと」

Those "Eiken Shortcuts" are driving me crazy...

🎧 Listen to the Audio Blog:

I was scrolling through Instagram the other day when I ran into one of those "how-to" ads for Eiken. You know the ones. This woman pops up on screen—bold enough to show her face, I’ll give her that—claiming she breezed through Eiken Grade Pre-1 and Grade 1 in just six months.

Then came another one that really got under my skin: "Help your elementary schooler jump from Grade 5 to Grade 3 in a single year!"

Look, I’m not saying these things are 100% impossible. But let’s be real—they are so misleading. They make it sound like anyone can do it if they just buy the right book or follow the right "secret" method. To me, it just sounds like the "munching" sounds of people preying on desperate parents. It’s a bit predatory, isn't it?

But honestly, what infuriates me the most is how they always brag about how they did it. Come on! Just because you happened to pull it off, that doesn't mean everyone can expect the same outcome just by following your "genius" method.

I get it, though. When people see these kinds of ads, they panic. They feel rushed, like they’re falling behind, and they end up chasing these shortcuts. But rushing only leaves you with a shallow understanding of the language.

I’d honestly love to never see those stupid ads again, but I’m sure they’ll keep popping up to get on my nerves. Ugh. At the end of the day, in the long run, skills built on discipline and hard work are the most reliable.

Today's Useful Phrase #1:

"get under one's skin" = 「癪に障る、イライラさせる」

Today's Useful Phrase #2:

"prey on..." = 「〜を食い物にする」

Today's Useful Phrase #3:

"panic" = 「焦る、パニックになる」

Today's Useful Phrase #4:

"shallow understanding" = 「浅い理解、うわべだけの知識」

Today's Useful Phrase #5:

"in the long run" = 「長期的に見れば、結局は」

Ethical Consumption - Useful Expression for Eiken Grade Pre-1 Writing

🎧 Listen to the Audio Blog:

This morning, I was putting together an online exercise to help my students prep for the Eiken Grade Pre-1 writing section. I decided to add a specific phrase to their "useful expressions" list: "ethical consumption."

The topic was from a 2023 past paper:
"Should companies be required to produce goods that are easy to recycle?"

I immediately thought that if I were still a teenager, I’d definitely write a big "YES!" essay. I'd probably totally ignore the fact that corporate profits might take a hit if recycling laws got stricter. I’d just claim that companies have a social responsibility to align with their customers' ethical values.

But as an adult—and as a studio owner who struggles to make ends meet every month—I know that things aren't always rainbows and butterflies. Businesses sometimes have to make tough calls just to stay afloat. I'm so relieved I haven't faced a real ethical dilemma yet; I’d hate to make a choice that goes against my values!

Anyway, my point is: while it would be easy for me as an adult to argue the negative side, I want to help young people express their pure sense of justice. I want to give them the building blocks—the right words and phrases—to write a strong affirmative essay for the world they want to see.

And that’s how "ethical consumption" made the cut. Here’s the sample sentence I made:

Sample Sentence:

"As more people become aware of the waste crisis, they are more likely to practice ethical consumption and demand that lawmakers pass legislation to strictly regulate companies, ensuring they align with consumer values."

So, have you ever felt stuck between harsh reality and your beautiful ideals? If you have, then it must have been a tough place to be, wasn't it?

New Song - Get a Grip!

🎧 Listen to the Audio Blog:

It's the last day of Golden Week. I hope everyone is having a great time!

Me? I'm working! I taught a lesson this morning, and I have two more in the afternoon and one in the evening. Between lessons, I'm busy creating new online activities for my upcoming classes.

You might be thinking, "Geez, she's a workaholic!" or "I feel sorry for her..." But don't! I love what I do, so no pity for me, please!

Today's Useful Phrase:

「しっかりしろ!」 = "Get a grip!"

I actually wrote a song titled "Get a Grip!" for a musical that my students will perform on August 1, 2026. The song is for a scene where one of the main characters loses her confidence but can't let it show. She’s literally trying to pull herself together.

I might post a video of this song with the choreography, so please stay tuned to our Instagram account!
