Hello! I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy. Let me tell you what happened to me last Monday!

After teaching some online lessons, I went home, and soon after I had dinner, I noticed that I could hardly talk!! Oh, no!!

I had musical theatre lessons to teach the next day, so the first thing that came to my mind was, "Am I going to be able to teach tomorrow?" I tried to utter some sounds, only to find out that all I could do was whisper! Suddenly, I felt very scared. "What's happening? Is this something serious? Should I be concerned?"

The next moment, I grabbed my phone and texted all the parents of my musical theatre students to let them know that I wouldn't be capable of teaching due to the condition of my vocal cords. Of course, everyone was kind enough to understand my situation, encouraging me to focus on my health and recovery. I was so touched by how kindly everyone responded to my message.

The next morning, I was hit by a high fever, convinced that I must have caught a terrible cold. However, after a doctor's visit, I found out that I had a bacterial infection!

By the way, if you happen to live in Chuo-ku, Sapporo, I highly recommend that you try かとう耳鼻咽喉科 (Kato Otolaryngology) the next time you have a sore throat! There were two things that made this clinic stand out from others. First, the moment the receptionist noticed that I had no energy and looked really sick, she took me to a small room in the back, which had a very comfortable armchair! Away from other patients' eyes, I draped myself over the armchair, which was so comfortable that I wanted to hug the receptionist afterward. Of course, I didn't, though!

Second, the clinic had a very small nose camera!! This is super important! I have only been to hospitals with large nose cameras before, where I always ended up moaning with tears running down my face. Once, it was even worse—I couldn't breathe for a long 30 seconds!! Kato Otolaryngology had a high-end camera that gave me almost zero uncomfortable sensation down my throat! Also, the doctor and nurses kindly guided me into a relaxing posture, which made the process super easy. No pain! No discomfort!

Anyway, back to my condition. The doctor showed me a picture of my vocal cords. They were swollen. He also looked at the back of my throat and said, "This is a clear sign of a bacterial infection." My first question was, "Is it contagious? Should I quarantine myself?" To my surprise, he told me that as long as I didn't cough, it wouldn't spread easily like the flu or COVID. He told me that quarantine was unnecessary.

That was such a relief! However, he warned me that my voice might not come back so soon. In the worst-case scenario, it might take a month. "A month!" Of course, I couldn't even speak properly, so I just whispered in my raspy voice. He nodded…

After that, I was prescribed some antibiotics to clear up the bacterial infection, along with some other medicines to fight the symptoms throughout my respiratory system and prevent coughing. These meds worked a miracle! My fever vanished, and by the second day after my doctor's visit, I was already feeling well enough to teach online lessons again. By Sunday, I was singing and dancing with the kids!

So, this is a picture of the honey which was given to me by one of my students' mothers. This honey is sourced from Hokkaido's beautiful acacia trees and was specially selected by a passionate "honey hunter"—someone who travels around to source the absolute best honey with pure dedication!! Isn't that cool?! And it tastes amazing! I ate a stick of honey this morning, and it gave me a slight tingling sensation, which I believe is proof that its antibacterial effect was kicking in. After a few minutes, the tingling was gone, and it felt much easier to speak. I could tell that my throat loved it!!

I was really touched by this yummy sore throat remedy-slash-treat!

I always learn so much from the parents. Everyone is so caring!! And they show it so discreetly! These parents are the epitome of kindness! I am so blessed to be surrounded by such warm-hearted people.

Studio Rules: Keeping Our Space Safe and Fun!

Welcome to our studio! To make sure everyone stays safe and has a great time, we have a few ground rules that we strictly follow at Step Forward.

Rule #1: Hands off the mirrors!
We use seven tall film mirrors on wheels. The great thing is they’re light-weight and won't shatter like glass. But here’s the catch: they’re very prone to rips. If someone pokes them with a pencil, they’ll go *pop!* and rip instantly. So, no touching!

Rule #2: Leave the windows to the teacher.
No one opens the windows except the teacher. If it gets too hot, just let me know, and I’ll happily open a window or blast the AC.

Rule #3: Respect the equipment.
Vandalism is absolutely prohibited. We have high-end speakers and microphones to keep our lessons in the optimal state. If anything gets damaged on purpose, parents will have to compensate for the cost. Let's take good care of our gear!

Rule #4: Restroom check before class!
Please try to go before your lesson starts. If it’s an emergency and you have to run during class, make sure to ask the teacher first. Walking out without permission is a big no-no.

Rule #5: Kindness wins.
Mean words and bad attitudes have no place in our studio. Nobody wants to work with people who lack compassion. We’re here to cooperate and build amazing things, and that only happens with kind words and mutual encouragement!

We also have standard rules like taking off your outdoor shoes, but those are a breeze to follow. Just keep these rules in mind, and let's make some magic happen!

Do you have a go-to snack? Because I definitely do. Mine is Iwatsuka’s Kuromame Senbei (岩塚の黒豆煎餅)—those simple, crunchy rice crackers with whole black beans embedded in them.

I love them for a few reasons. First off, the ingredient list is super short. They’re so simple and clean that I feel totally guilt-free eating them.

They’re also the ultimate work snack. Whenever I’m buried in work at my computer, running out of time to make lunch, and starting to feel that mid-day crash, I tell myself I'll just have two or three.

Okay, I lied. I usually end up eating more than five! I just can't help it—they're *that* good! But hey, they give me an instant energy boost!

Plus, that loud, satisfying crunch when you bite into them gives your brain just the right amount of stimulation to wake you up. That’s exactly why I always keep a whole pack right next to me whenever I have a mountain of work to get through.

💡 Useful Expressions

1. go-to = 「お決まりの、定番の、間違いない」

2. embedded in ~ = 「〜に埋め込まれている」

3. buried in work = 「仕事に追われている、仕事に埋もれている」

4. mid-day crash = 「午後の急激な眠気・だるさ、エネルギー切れ」

5. end up [doing] = 「結局〜することになる、最終的に〜という結果になる」

6. can't help it = 「どうしてもやってしまう、我慢できない、どうしようもない」

Heading to My Studio? Here’s a Clever Parking Hack!

Are you interested in visiting my studio? Do you drive? And do you need a parking space? If your answer happens to be yes to these questions, then I highly recommend reading this!

A brand-new complex—featuring a large drugstore, a coffee shop, and a gym—just opened this past March. Luckily, they have a massive parking lot and it’s within a 3-minute walk from my studio!

By the way, it's not just a regular drugstore! This drugstore offers frozen foods, fruit and vegetables, dairy products, condiments, drinks, alcohol, and snacks, to say nothing of the variety of health-and-beauty-related products and daily necessities.

Here is the best part: if you shop at the drugstore or grab a coffee, you get two hours of free parking!

Today's Useful Phrase #1:

"grab a coffee" = 「(サクッと)コーヒーを買いに行く、飲む」

Today's Useful Phrase #2:

"to say nothing of 〜" = 「〜は言うまでもなく、もちろんのこと」

Today's Useful Phrase #3:

"free parking" = 「無料駐車、無料駐車場」

So, if you’re planning to visit my studio, don’t waste your money on regular parking lots. Instead, just stop by this new drugstore, pick up a bottle of water or something small (you really don't need to spend much—even around ¥100–¥200 is totally fine!), and park your car for free.

Today's Useful Phrase #4:

"stop by 〜" = 「〜にちょっと立ち寄る、寄り道する」

How long do you plan to stay at the studio? I’m pretty sure it’s going to be less than two hours anyway. Regular parking lots around here will easily charge you over ¥600, so skipping them is a no-brainer. Just stop by the drugstore, get what you need, and save some cash!

Today's Useful Phrase #5:

"no-brainer" = 「考えるまでもないこと、迷う余地のないこと」

Those "Eiken Shortcuts" are driving me crazy...

I was scrolling through Instagram the other day when I ran into one of those "how-to" ads for Eiken. You know the ones. This woman pops up on screen—bold enough to show her face, I’ll give her that—claiming she breezed through Eiken Grade Pre-1 and Grade 1 in just six months.

Then came another one that really got under my skin: "Help your elementary schooler jump from Grade 5 to Grade 3 in a single year!"

Look, I’m not saying these things are 100% impossible. But let’s be real—they are so misleading. They make it sound like anyone can do it if they just buy the right book or follow the right "secret" method. To me, it just sounds like the "munching" sounds of people preying on desperate parents. It’s a bit predatory, isn't it?

But honestly, what infuriates me the most is how they always brag about how they did it. Come on! Just because you happened to pull it off, that doesn't mean everyone can expect the same outcome just by following your "genius" method.

I get it, though. When people see these kinds of ads, they panic. They feel rushed, like they’re falling behind, and they end up chasing these shortcuts. But rushing only leaves you with a shallow understanding of the language.

I’d honestly love to never see those stupid ads again, but I’m sure they’ll keep popping up to get on my nerves. Ugh. At the end of the day, in the long run, skills built on discipline and hard work are the most reliable.

Today's Useful Phrase #1:

"get under one's skin" = 「癪に障る、イライラさせる」

Today's Useful Phrase #2:

"prey on..." = 「〜を食い物にする」

Today's Useful Phrase #3:

"panic" = 「焦る、パニックになる」

Today's Useful Phrase #4:

"shallow understanding" = 「浅い理解、うわべだけの知識」

Today's Useful Phrase #5:

"in the long run" = 「長期的に見れば、結局は」

Ethical Consumption - Useful Expression for Eiken Grade Pre-1 Writing

🎧 Listen to the Audio Blog:

This morning, I was putting together an online exercise to help my students prep for the Eiken Grade Pre-1 writing section. I decided to add a specific phrase to their "useful expressions" list: "ethical consumption."

The topic was from a 2023 past paper:
"Should companies be required to produce goods that are easy to recycle?"

I immediately thought that if I were still a teenager, I’d definitely write a big "YES!" essay. I'd probably totally ignore the fact that corporate profits might take a hit if recycling laws got stricter. I’d just claim that companies have a social responsibility to align with their customers' ethical values.

But as an adult—and as a studio owner who struggles to make ends meet every month—I know that things aren't always rainbows and butterflies. Businesses sometimes have to make tough calls just to stay afloat. I'm so relieved I haven't faced a real ethical dilemma yet; I’d hate to make a choice that goes against my values!

Anyway, my point is: while it would be easy for me as an adult to argue the negative side, I want to help young people express their pure sense of justice. I want to give them the building blocks—the right words and phrases—to write a strong affirmative essay for the world they want to see.

And that’s how "ethical consumption" made the cut. Here’s the sample sentence I made:

Sample Sentence:

"As more people become aware of the waste crisis, they are more likely to practice ethical consumption and demand that lawmakers pass legislation to strictly regulate companies, ensuring they align with consumer values."

So, have you ever felt stuck between harsh reality and your beautiful ideals? If you have, then it must have been a tough place to be, wasn't it?

New Song - Get a Grip!

🎧 Listen to the Audio Blog:
※文字をタップして好きな場所から再生したい方は、 【こちら(LISTENページ)】からお聴きください!

It's the last day of Golden Week. I hope everyone is having a great time!

Me? I'm working! I taught a lesson this morning, and I have two more in the afternoon and one in the evening. Between lessons, I'm busy creating new online activities for my upcoming classes.

You might be thinking, "Geez, she's a workaholic!" or "I feel sorry for her..." But don't! I love what I do, so no pity for me, please!

Today's Useful Phrase:

「しっかりしろ!」 = "Get a grip!"

I actually wrote a song titled "Get a Grip!" for a musical that my students will perform on August 1, 2026. The song is for a scene where one of the main characters loses her confidence but can't let it show. She’s literally trying to pull herself together.

I might post a video of this song with the choreography, so please stay tuned to our Instagram account!
